What Is An F20 Error On A Whirlpool Washing Machine?

Modern Whirlpool washing machines display two-digit or three-digit codes in the event of an error to help users and technicians efficiently diagnose and repair problems. Many of the codes begin with the letter F followed by two numeric digits, in this case "F20." Identifying the cause of the problem, fixing it and preventing it from returning helps keep your Whirlpool appliance working efficiently. There are several situations that trigger an "F20" error code.

F20 Error Code

Whirlpool error code F20 appears when no water is detected entering the machine or if the pressure switch trip is not detected. The pressure switch is the part of the machine that monitors high water pressure. The washing machine automatically cancels the wash cycle during an F20 error.

Causes

F20 errors appear if there is a restriction in the water supply caused by a kink or blockage in any of the inlet or outlet hoses, a disconnected water supply, low water pressure or a faulty drain pump. A puncture, cracked, loose or faulty pressure switch or pressure switch hose may also cause an F20 error. Be sure to always use the correct type and amount of laundry detergent.

Action When No Water is in the Drum

Check the inlet hoses for kinks, twists or other restrictions; nearby appliances could be standing on the hoses. Make sure the washing machine does not crush or kink its hoses when in its usual position. Check that both hot and cold water inlet faucets are open and that there are no blockages in the inlet screens. Do this by shutting off the water supply, disconnecting the hoses and taking a look inside where the hoses attach to the washing machine.

Action When Water is in the Drum

Have a qualified technician open the appliance and check the drain pump and pressure switch for signs of trouble. The pressure switch hose should also be properly attached and in good condition to prevent F20 codes from occurring. There may be a charge for this service if your appliance is uninsured or outside of its warranty period.
