Borax is an inexpensive cleaning product that is typically much more effective than many commercial household floor cleaning products. By making your own homemade floor cleaners, using borax as your main cleaning ingredient, you will save both time and money. Whether you use a spray-on and wipe-off floor cleaner, or you make a cleaning solution in a bucket that can be used with a mop, borax is a versatile ingredient that will suit your needs.
Spray-on Solution
Step 1
Pour 2 cups warm water, 2 tbsp. vinegar, 1 tsp. borax and 1 squirt liquid dish soap into a spray bottle. The borax will clean, the vinegar will disinfect, and the soap will cut through residue.
Step 2
Spray the solution onto your floors, covering about a 3-foot square section at a time. The spray-on solution works well for hardwood and laminate, which need little moisture when cleaning so as to prevent water absorption and warping.
Step 3
Wipe the floor clean with a dust mop, and continue in 3-foot square sections until the whole floor is clean.
Bucket Solution
Step 1
Pour 1 gallon warm water, 1/4 cup borax, 1/2 cup vinegar and 2 squirts dish soap into a bucket.
Step 2
Dip a mop into the solution, and wring out excess water. This works well for vinyl, tile and linoleum flooring.
Step 3
Wipe the damp mop across the floor, and repeat until the whole floor is clean.
Tip
You can use borax to clean carpeting. Sprinkle a light dusting of borax over the carpet, let sit for 20 minutes, then vacuum the carpet. Keep pets and family members off of the floor during the 20-minute wait period.
