Standard Weights For Crushed Rock Per Meter

The weight of crushed rock will vary greatly depending on the type of the stone and the size and uniformity of the crush. The smaller the crush size, the heavier the load.

General Weights

Solid rock is estimated at 2.5 to 3tons per cubic meter. If rock is crushed into uniform sizes, the presence of open space between the particles causes the load to be lighter — approximately 1.6 tons per cubic meter. Mixed sizes of crushed rock can range from 1.6 to 2.2 tons per cubic meter.

Sands & Chips

Weighing in at .92 tons are masonry sand, building sand, and stone chips or flakes. These are some of the lightest materials. The next level, at just under one ton, are concrete sand and airfield sand.

Landscaping Rocks

Natural rocks, 12 to 24 inches, which are commonly used in landscaping, are approximately 1.18 tons per cubic meter. Two-inch to 12-inch over-sized rocks are approximately 1.25 tons.

Gravel & Aggregates

Crushed aggregate, one-inch crushed concrete, recycled asphalt, 3/8-inch pea gravel, 2-inch sewer filter rock, and concrete and asphalt aggregate blends all weigh in at 1.07 tons. Pit run gravel follows at 1.25 tons per cubic meter, regardless of whether it is 2-inch or 4-inch. The heaviest of the crushed rock selections are Angular Rip Rap and white granite, weighing in at 1.34 tons per cubic meter.
