Cord covers hide the electrical wires that hang down from wall-mounted electronic devices such as TVs, stereos and speakers. Double-sided adhesive tape fastens the cover to the wall. Cord covers are often painted to blend with the wall color. If you're moving an electronic device, you need to remove the cord cover before attempting the move. While the electrical cord can slide through the cord cover, the plug cannot. By following these steps, you can remove the cover without doing any damage to the wall.
Step 1
Thread a piece of fishing wire behind the electrical cord coming out of the electronic device. Hold both sides of the wire and bring it in contact with the adhesive tape that holds the cord cover in place. Position the fishing wire so that it sits where the foamy material in between the adhesive sides is.
Step 2
Pull the fishing wire so it cuts through the foam material. Continue cutting along the length of the cord cover until you reach the other end. Now remove the cord cover from the wall.
Step 3
Grip the electrical cord and the cord cover and pull them apart. The cord should easily rip through the adhesive side still stuck to the cord cover. If not, slice the tape with a butter knife and then remove the cord from the cord cover.
Step 4
With your fingernail, rub one corner of the side of the adhesive tape still stuck to the wall. Once it starts peeling, peel it away from the wall. You might need to help it peel off by using a putty knife to scrape it.
Step 5
Scrub off any remaining adhesive residue on the wall using isopropyl or toluene alcohol. Use a non-abrasive scrub pad to get the adhesive off. Wash the wall with soap and water when finished.
Tip
If your cord cover doesn't have any adhesive backing, you need to remove the screws holding it to the wall with a screwdriver.
Warning
Before you start, test-scrub an inconspicuous area of the wall with the alcohol to ensure it doesn't alter the wall's finish. If you just try to rip the cord cover off the wall, you may cause damage to the wall itself.
