How To Calculate Building Area

Determining the area of a building is important for many reasons. If you are selling a building, such as a house, you will need to provide potential buyers with the total square footage for the home. If you are purchasing a building, you will want to know the total area in order to determine if the size suits your specific needs. If you are painting or applying wallpaper, knowing the area of your work space is necessary in order to know the amount of supplies to purchase. Figuring the area of a building can be done simply in a few steps.

Step 1

Measure the length and width of each room by measuring adjacent walls.

Step 2

Multiply the length to the width for the area of each individual room. Record the area figures on sheet of paper as you go.

Step 3

Add the area figures for each room in order to obtain the total area or square footage for the entire building.
