How To Remove A Glass Whirlpool Oven Door
A dirty glass pane on an oven door can be unsightly. If the glass in the oven door is smudged with soot or drips of grease, you can remove the door to clean them. If the glass has a crack or has shattered, replacing the panes will allow you to use the oven safely.
Whirlpool oven door removal may seem like a pain to get to the panes, but it's a simple task that can be completed in an hour with the proper tools, techniques and patience.
Whirlpool Oven Door Hinge Problems
Hinges that squeak and jolt when the oven door is opened or closed may need to be replaced. Whirlpool oven door hinge problems include hinges that have been bent due to an open door getting pushed in the wrong direction or food and grease clogging the joints.
Oven doors with hinge issues or that won't close properly can be tricky to contend with. When removing the oven door to repair or replace the glass, take a minute to clean and inspect the oven door hinges as well.
Prepare to Remove the Door
The oven door is unwieldy and heavy. Once it's off its hinges, it can fall and damage itself, flooring or the person handling the oven door.
Whirlpool recommends having a large cushioned area to place the oven door on once it's off the hinges. Put down a folded comforter or other padded product in an area that's in close proximity to where you'll be working.
Remove the Oven Door
Pull the oven door to its full horizontal position so that it's parallel to the floor. Locate the hinges on either side of the door. The hinges will be locked and require the latch to be lifted, rotated or flipped toward the unlocked position or toward the opened door.
Once they're unhinged, partially close the oven door to the ajar position. Firmly grasp both sides of the oven door and carefully lift it up while pulling toward you. If it's stubborn, give it a jiggle from side to side.
Remove the Glass from the Oven Door
Once the oven door is off of the main frame of the appliance, remove the screws that secure the inner door panel. Lift the panel and remove the handle support. Use a putty knife to remove the two-sided tape that secures the glass to the door panels.
Repair Clinic suggests thoroughly removing and cleaning the area where the old tape was installed so the new tape will adhere well to the panel and the glass panes when it's reinstalled. Gently lift the panes from the panel. Clean both panes with soap and water and a nonabrasive sponge so as not to scratch them.
