F-21 Error On A Whirlpool Duet Washing Machine

The Whirlpool Duet washing machine has an electronic panel where users select the desired wash cycle, add cycle features, and start or stop the cycle as needed. The panel also displays error codes when common problems occur, such as issues with the water or oversudsing. If the Whirlpool Duet panel shows "F21," drain times are longer than expected and the machine requires attention.

Reset

When the "F21" error code appears, try pressing "Pause/Cancel" to stop the current wash cycle. If water remains in the washing machine tub, touch "Drain/Spin" to force a secondary drain cycle to remove the water. Once all the water drains, try selecting a new wash cycle and pushing "Start."

Drain Hose

If the "F21" error code repeats after performing the reset, a problem exists with the drain system. Set towels on the floor to protect it from any water leaks, then disconnect the drain hose from the rear of the washing machine. Clean entrance to the hose out and shake the hose firmly to dislodge any clogs. When you reconnect the drain hose to the washing machine, straighten the hose out because bends in the hose might also cause a drain issue.

Standpipe or Drain Facility

Installing the drain hose properly into the standpipe or drain facility is necessary for proper drain performance, so issues with the drain hose and the standpipe or drain facility can also lead to the "F21" error code. If the drain hose is connected to a standpipe, measure the distance from the bottom of the washing machine to the top of the drain hose, where the drain hose is connected to the standpipe. If the distance from the top of the drain hose to the bottom of the washer is more than 96 inches, disconnect the drain hose and place the hose lower on the standpipe, then secure. If the drain hose is inserted directly into a drain facility, pull the drain hose out slightly from the drain if pushed too far in to allow for an air gap between the hose and the drain. Contact a plumber for assistance with these steps if necessary.

HE Detergent

The Whirlpool Duet washing machine is an energy-efficient washer, which requires the use of high-efficiency detergent, which is commonly labeled with "HE." The use of other types of detergent can cause excessive foaming during the wash cycle, which slows or prevents draining and causes the "F21" error. Select a new "Drain/Spin" cycle to help take the extra soap and water out of the machine. When measuring HE detergent, follow the product container recommendations for the proper amount to use or fill only to the "Fill" line inside the dispenser.

Service

When the "F21" error code persists even after you have performed troubleshooting steps with the drain hose, standpipe or drain facility, and detergent, a power reset might be needed. Disconnect power to the Whirlpool Duet washing machine and wait 30 seconds. Plug the washing machine back into the power supply and select a new cycle. Contact Whirlpool for assistance if the "F21" code comes back after power is restored.
