How To Stop Sump Pump Noise

Sump pump noises create quite a racket, and depending on how often your sump pump runs, can disturb everyone in the home. If your sump pump makes a banging or slurping sound, perform a few common repairs to quiet the noise. Making some simple changes to your sump pump also helps damper loud sounds and bangs. Before making any changes, go through a troubleshooting checklist and figure out the proper actions to take.

Step 1

Assess the sound and note if it is a banging or slurping noise. If it is a banging noise, check your service records to find out if a check valve or silencing check valve is installed on your sump pump. If not, remove the check valve on the end of the sump pump's discharge pipe with a wrench. The end of the pipe is near your home's drainage line.

Step 2

Install a new silencing check valve on the end of the discharge pipe with the wrench. This valve silences noises caused by water falling back down the discharge pipe when the pump turns off. If the sound is a slurping noise, move on to step 3.

Step 3

Look at the turn-off switch on the basin of the sump pump. Note the level of the switch and adjust it up or down until the noise stops. The slurping occurs because the off switch is set too high and does not turn off before water reaches the intake. It is all right if all the water is not sucked completely out of the basin before the pump turns off. If the noise is a rattling or banging sound caused by pump vibrations and operation, move to step 4.

Step 4

Secure the discharge pipes with new plumbing brackets at the point where the pipes are rattling or banging. First, turn off the pump and cut the power by closing the breaker to your sump pump. Mount new brackets to the flooring joists with wood screws between and set the pipes in the braces. Mount a bracket wherever the vibrations occur. Secure the pipes with 12-gauge wire to dampen vibrations if bracket mounting is impossible.
