How Do I Remove The Pin From An Emtek Steel Hinge?

Things Needed

  • 3/32-inch Allen wrench

  • Hammer

  • Nailset or awl

  • Slotted screwdriver

Tip

Although the Allen wrench size referenced in this procedure is typical for many Emtek steel hinges, various hinge sizes require other wrench sizes to remove the security plug.

Emtek steel hinges are widely used as security hinges on exterior doors in both commercial and residential applications. Emtek steel hinges are designed with a sealed pin cylinder protected with a threaded plug. The procedure for removing the hinge pins is typical to all Emtek steel hinge types.

Step 1

Remove the hinge's threaded pin security plug at the bottom of each hinge pin space, using a 3/32 inch Allen wrench. Turn the plug clockwise until released.

Step 2

Tap upward on the bottom end of the hinge pin with a nailset or awl and a hammer. Raise the hinge pin's top cap to approximately 1/4 inch above the hinge loops.

Step 3

Insert the tip of a screwdriver under the lip of the hinge pin's top cap. Tap the screwdriver with a hammer to extract the pin from the hinge.
