How To Disinfect Showers For Athlete's Foot

Things Needed

  • Latex or rubber gloves

  • Damp cleaning rags

  • Disinfecting cleaning product with the active ingredients pine oil, sodium hypochlorite, phenols, ethanol or benzalkonium chloride

Tip

Look for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) label on any disinfectant product you choose to make sure it complies with the standards of safety and effectiveness for killing the fungus that causes athlete's foot.

Make sure to remove excess dirt, grim, or soil before disinfecting your shower if your product is not a combination disinfectant and cleaner.

When showering in a public place such as a gym or swimming pool, wear skidproof shower shoes to avoid getting athlete's foot.

Warning

Keep disinfectant product out of the reach of children.

Keep disinfectant product away from flames.

Never mix different products together.

Before using disinfectant product, read the warning label on the container in case the product gets in the eyes or is swallowed. Follow directions for proper product storage and disposal methods.

You don't have to be an NFL quarterback to get a case of athlete's foot. Trichophyton, more commonly called athlete's foot, is a fungal infection that appears on the top, bottom or side of the foot. It also can appear between the toes or in and around the toenails. The fungus grows well in warm, moist places. Walking barefoot in these damp areas can result in infection.

Step 1

Choose a disinfecting and cleaning product that does not require scrubbing and comes in a spray bottle or can. If you choose a product that only cleans, you will not kill the fungus. If you use a product that only disinfects, you will have to clean the surface first. Look for the words "disinfectant cleaner" on the label.

Step 2

Put on gloves.

Step 3

Clear out all items in the shower before applying the cleaner. Hold the container 6 to 8 inches from surface to be treated. Spray the area until it is wet.

Step 4

Wait 10 minutes to allow the disinfectant cleaner to penetrate the surface and kill the fungus.

Step 5

Wipe off the disinfectant with a clean, damp rag.

Step 6

Rinse the area with warm shower water.

Step 7

Repeat the process daily until the athlete's foot infection has cleared with prescribed medication to prevent reinfection. Once the infection is cleared, disinfect the shower weekly for maintenance.
