I Tried the Dyson Gen5detect Vacuum and My Home Has Never Been Cleaner

Dyson is a staple in the floor care space, and one of the brand's most recent innovations is the Dyson Gen5detect cordless vacuum. As a person with three cats who is constantly cleaning and vacuuming, I jumped at the opportunity to try out the vacuum. Here's everything you need to know about the Dyson Gen5detect and if it's really worth the upgrade.

The Dyson Gen5detect is a cordless vacuum with enhanced features that any cleaner would love and retails for $949.99. For starters, the vacuum has a long-lasting battery with up to 70 minutes of run-time. It comes with a few attachments, including two cleaning heads (a fluffy cleaner and a motorbar cleaner with a detangling design), a smaller hair screw tool, and a built-in dusting and crevice tool. The vacuum emits a green light from its fluffy optic cleaning head that allows you to see microscopic particles you likely otherwise wouldn't have seen. In addition to the laser light, the vacuum has a display that shows all the particles you're vacuuming through its HEPA filtration system. Once you're done vacuuming, Dyson also made cleaning even easier with an ejection mechanism that empties out the bin without having to touch it.

I live in a home with multiple cats, so it's safe to say that it can get pretty messy, whether it's cat hair, cardboard bits from cat scratchers, or litter. The Gen5detect has been great for cleaning up pet hair and litter, especially when using the fluffy optic cleaning head on hardwood floors. I love how the laser shows every bit of dust and dirt and how clean it can get with only a swipe or two. For pet hair on rugs, the digital motorbar cleaner head is my go-to and left the rug pet hair-free. I've used other vacuums to remove pet hair on rugs, and this Dyson vacuum outshines the competition.

I also love all the tools that it comes with. I use the built-in crevice tool to clean up my car, window sills, corners, and spots that are tough to reach. The hair screw tool is perfect for vacuuming pet beds, mattresses, sofas, stairs, and smaller areas.

But the vacuum doesn't come without setbacks. Although the vacuum performed well on low- and medium-pile rugs, it struggled with thicker carpets and rugs. When I used the digital motorbar cleaner head on thicker carpets, the brush bar would stop spinning and the vacuum would have to be turned off and on again. It's also a bit on the heavier side, so vacuuming for extended periods of time might be tiring for some. And the almost $1,000 price tag is tough to ignore.

I've always questioned if Dyson vacuums are worth the hype, and it turns out they are. Despite some setbacks, I love the Dyson Gen5detect. It has an overall amazing performance, especially against pet hair, and is packed with the latest Dyson cleaning technology. I'd highly recommend it for people with pets, anyone with a higher budget and are looking for a splurge-worthy vacuum, and for people who live in homes with hard floors and low- or medium-pile rug or carpets.
